Why daleks are scary

Overusing the Daleks leads to boredom around the creatures, making them far less intimidating and scary than they would be if they were gone for a while and then hyped up.

Despite the fact that the Daleks are terrifying in their own right, one aspect of their creation that may make them even greater is the inspiration behind their motivations. Doctor Who was created less than 20 years after the conclusion of World War 2 and as such, the Nazis were still a terrifying and recent threat to many people in the UK.

Consequently, the showrunners based the Daleks off of the Nazi ideals of the 'Ubermensch' and the 'ideal race,' giving the Daleks a terrifying ideology based in real-world, recent history. Due to the fact that the design is outdated and the Daleks have often been overused in recent years, the Daleks have lost the fear factor that used to make them so popular. Villains such as the Cybermen and the Weeping Angels have had more horrifying plots of late and been used relatively sparingly though Cybermen are certainly close to overuse.

As such, many fans don't consider the Daleks to be scary anymore, which has dampened how the villains are perceived today. After the revival of Doctor Who in , then showrunner Russell T Davies introduced the in-canon explanation of the Time War as the reason behind the Doctor's disappearance. The Time War was a truly genius idea from Davis and the Daleks were the villains who fought against the Time Lords in the conflict, inflicting even more agony on the Doctor.

Other villains in Doctor Who tend to have different plots when they appear in different stories. For instance, the Master is always up to something new, yet the Daleks are always doing one thing. The Daleks are always trying to exterminate life on a certain planet or universe. However, this does get kind of old after a while. While stories such as Daleks in Manhattan introduced variety to the Dalek mythos, it didn't stay around for too long.

In the scenes I've watched with Daleks the show of course takes it for granted that you, the viewer, are terrified. So, why should I be? Nigh invulnerability. Seriously, everything thrown at them more or less bounces without a scratch. Very deadly. Everything from life forms to complex machinery are ground under their treads completely effortlessly.

Absolutely evil. Emotions like love and empathy have been purged from their race. They exist only to sterilize the entire time stream of any non-Dalek life. They can't be reasoned with or argued with, they have no interest in any non-Daleks supremacy related issues whatsoever. The Daleks are incredibly intelligent and have access to some of the most sophisticated technology that exists.

With this intelligence also comes patience- they are absolutely willing to set something in motion now according to their calculations which will result in their victory in five hundred years. If you haven't watched Series 1 Episode titled "Dalek", you should. I think it does a brilliant job on establishing the Daleks' nature and role in the Whoniverse.

The first time the character Van Statten finds the Dalek, he's not scared by it. The same for his whole staff, or even Rose. It isn't until the Dalek breaks free, and starts killing everything it finds that they start to realize the destruction machine that they had all along.

If you're so impressive, then why not just reason with this Dalek? It must be willing to negotiate. There must be something it needs. Everything needs something. If the Dalek gets out, it'll murder every living creature. That's all it needs. As usual, evil lies in the eyes of the beholder. They don't see themselves as evil, maybe as the opposite.

They honestly believe they should kill any creature that is not a Dalek. Sign up to join this community. The world has moved incredibly far in fifty years. For the Daleks this is a problem. The innocent world of the sixties is in contrast to the world of today. Compared, Doctor Who comes out as a fluffy bunny in the park, just much more intelligent. The Daleks are not suited in this present time to be scary.

They were scary as they represented the horrors of the Nazis, now they are out of place. This could be rectified if you used them as social commentary about, say, immigration with their extreme xenophobic views. However, will that make them scary again? Loads of people complained that was too scary for the time slot.

If the Daleks managed to scare me now it will show that Doctor Who would have gone beyond the limit for the time of day. Now the problem with this is because the Daleks are so iconic. One Dalek lump, flash of bronze, or sink plunger and we know that they are going to show up yet again. I propose you not show any Daleks in any trailers for future episodes.

If we know that the angry pepper pots are going to glide in next week, the moment of surprise is gone, and they then are no longer scary.

A good way to scare is the moment of surprise. I talked about desensitisation through the modern world. The writers of modern Doctor Who have shot themselves in the foot through overuse. In Classic Who, the Daleks were in a serial every 1. While now it is only 0.
